Causative agents of acute gastroenteritis in children in the U.S. resulting in hospitalization. You can see that the majority of cases are due to viral agents. Really Rotavirus, Norwalk agent and others. So you would think that when studying for the Boards that gee you’d better really pay attention to three-quarters of this pie. It’s true that these are important things to pay attention to, but notice that Salmonella and Shigella and Campylobacter and these others do have real specific presentations, specific complications and specific therapies associated with them. So you have to pay attention to them out of proportion to the epidemiology. I find it useful to explore gastroenteritis - instead of looking at it in terms of bacteria, virus, parasite - to explore it in a different way and look at the site of infection and inflammation. Look at the site of involvement. The reason I split it up this way is that there are different clinical presentations, different complications, and different things you need to look for. So we are going to look at two different things, looking at the small bowel as the site of involvement versus the large bowel and we are going to do a brief overview of both and then we’ll get into the specific agents.
