Allergic Toxemia or Tension Fatigue Syndrome

Allergic toxemia is the prototype of this group of diseases. It is a term that is difficult to define because descriptions vary in publications on the subject, even though it is said to have a "specific symptom complex." The most commonly mentioned symptoms are recurrent headache, abdominal pain, fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, various respiratory complaints, and pallor. In general, fatigue is the most prominent and frequently occurring symptom. The term "allergic tension-fatigue syndrome" has been applied to the same condition, especially when it is diagnosed in children. Patterns of symptoms vary over time. Fatigue and listlessness may alternate with hyperactivity, and insomnia with hypersomnia. Pain may be referable at various times to muscles, joints, bones, abdomen, chest, and head. Less frequently mentioned complaints are lymph node enlargement, low-grade fever, urinary frequency, bladder discomfort, excessive colds, tachycardia, hives, difficulty concentrating, and a bluish discoloration of the lower eyelids ("allergic shiners").
